Follow us on the Te Araroa Trail in New Zealand

We’ve been travelling for more than 16 months now! Wow, time is running fast.
So far, we spent six months in Europe, four months in South East Asia and another six months in Australia. After all this travelling we definitely needed a break. So we got back to Tasmania, where we started our Australia trip in March 2015.
We’re staying in our beloved Hobart for two months (Sep/Oct) and do all the things we couldn’t do while travelling. Besides watching movies and reading books we’re also going to work on this blog and do a lot of preparations for our next project thruNZ.

And this project is the reason, why YOU, dear English reader, can read this blog post.

What is this all about?

Our next project thruNZ is all about hiking. We plan to hike the over 3’000 kilometres long long-distance hike called “Te Araroa Trail” in New Zealand. Because of this forthcoming adventure on the Te Araroa Trail we decided to write in English as well. This is all new to us, because so far we’ve written about our travelling experiences on this blog – – in German only.

This article should give you an idea about us, our plans and the trail.

SO, in case you don’t know who we are, you can catch up here.

Hiking the Te Araroa Trail

We plan to start the Te Araroa Trail in late October / beginning of November 2015 and hopefully finish it around March / April 2016. It usually takes between 120 and 150 days to walk the entire trail. The route of the Te Araroa Trail leads through the North and South Island of New Zealand and therefore offers a wide range of different areas to walk through and landscapes to enjoy. The trail officially opened in 2011. Since then, more and more people have walked the trail. Between 150 and 200 thru hikers at the moment.

If you want to know more about the Te Araroa Trail, you can read it here in a GREAT summary.

Why the Te Araroa Trail?

In 2009 we spent seven months in New Zealand travelling and going to language school. Surely, we haven’t seen all of this beautiful country yet and after leaving New Zealand we were determined to return some day. This day has come now. After roughly 18 months of travelling we’re going to return to New Zealand. But this time we don’t buy a campervan and cruise around like last time. No, this time we walk from north to south and will experience New Zealand in a whole new way. This different approach and our passion for hiking and being in nature were the reasons why we chose to walk these 3’000 kilometres.

What can you expect from this blog?

Before we actually start on the Te Araroa Trail we write about our preparation and about the gear we choose to walk with. You will find these blog posts in the category “Trail Know-How”.

During the hike we write regularly about our experiences on the trail and from both our perspectives! You will find these blog posts in the category “Trail Stories”.

You also can follow us on: FacebookTwitter or Google+. AND start following Philippe’s Instagram account and enjoy the latest pictures while we’re on the Te Araroa Trail.

That’s our plan so far. Stay tuned for more.
